The long-awaited Behind The Scenes featurette about my award-winning short film “Melody.” This was such a wonderful experience to work on, and was without a doubt the most ambitious project we have made to date. I’m so thankful for all the hard work the entire cast and crew put in. Everyone is so awesome at what they do–it makes my job as a director so much more fun.
The Idea Board. Eventually, some good things evolved on this.
The Blank Page Monster was a phrase I learned from my favorite author in first grade. During an assembly, he referred to the writing process as a battle against the blank page. You can only stare at a blank page for so long; eventually you have to just write.
Imagine not being able to see the pavement. That’s how bad it was.
We got a little carried away.
My adopted baby. 5DmkIII with Canon EOS Cinema Prime 24mm. Also had 50, 85mm.
Dave Seamon as Dave. He wrote and performed the entire soundtrack as well.
My dad and Assistant Director Josephine Bathan. We set up pretty lights…
…it looked fantastic.
Natalie Sigismondi is so talented.
Myself and Producer Chris Pasi hanging out during lunch break
We never took ourselves too seriously…Everyone made sure everyone kept laughing.
Dave let us take over his actual room for the shoot. No way it would have gotten done without him.
And the madness begins…we did most of it off camera because I knew there was no way we had time, both in the film and in reality, to show the painting of the whole room.
The room as we left it: Fantastic.
During the fight scene, we had to rig a splash shield for the camera. Considering the camera was worth more than all of us combined…we didn’t want to have to pay any heavy fees on return. I’m still a little disappointed we never got to do the “painting the lens” shot that I planned using plexiglass for…
Melody was such a wonderful experience. Never has a film I worked on more perfectly translated from vision to screenplay to storyboard to screen than this one has. Everyone working on it was so extremely talented…it made my life ten times easier. I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
